What Is a Fencing Plastron?
A fencing plastron is an essential piece of protective equipment worn underneath the fencing jacket. It provides an additional layer of protection on the weapon arm side of the body, helping to reduce the risk of injury from broken blades or hard hits.
Unlike a standard jacket, a plastron is specifically designed to reinforce vulnerable areas, making it a mandatory item in most fencing clubs and competitions.
Why Is a Plastron Required?
A plastron is required in fencing for safety reasons. In the rare event that a blade breaks, the plastron acts as a secondary barrier to protect the fencer from injury.
Most fencing organisations and clubs require all participants to wear a plastron during training and competition. Without one, you may not be allowed to fence.
This makes it one of the most important items in any fencing kit, especially for beginners.
Fencing Safety Standards (CE & FIE)
When choosing a fencing plastron, it’s important to understand the different safety ratings:
CE Standard (350N)
- Suitable for beginners and club use with certain weapon sizes or non electric
- Provides reliable protection for training
- More affordable option
FIE Standard (800N)
- Required for official competitions
- Higher level of puncture resistance
- Used by advanced and competitive fencers
- Used for anyone fencing electric size 5 weapons and above
If you’re just starting out, a CE-rated plastron is usually sufficient but likely you will need and 800N FIE plastron very soon after for club training and competitions.
Choosing the Right Plastron
When buying a fencing plastron in the UK, consider:
- Your level (beginner vs competition)
- Required safety rating (CE or FIE)
- Comfort and fit under your jacket
A properly fitted plastron should feel secure without restricting movement.
